Tips for Coaches. A common problem that new coaches face, is that their own game can suffer as a consequence of continually ‘feeding’ the ball to a student. Once out on the court for a serious game, the ‘coaching mind set’ can take over & all the aggression & will to win disappears' & you find yourself ‘feeding’ your opponent. An effective way to combat this, is to finish every coaching session with a ‘serious’ game & depending on the ability of the student, put certain restrictions on your own game. Maybe give them a head start on points, or force yourself to play a certain shot or to a certain length. Remember also to make the most of your coaching session, by ensuring you always ‘feed’ the ball accurately. Don’t be content with just getting the ball to land roughly where you want it to go, place it exactly where you want it, vary the placement to the side wall, depending on your students ability, & the shot you are getting them to practice. It is too easy to get complacent & just put the ball anywhere, which in the long run is going to just play havoc with your own game. Always use every coaching session as a tool to improve your own game as well as your students! Happy Squashing - Dawn
