What to do when you are buggered
What to do when you are buggered What’s the best plan of attack when you are 2 sets to 1 down, 2-2 in the fourth, you have just had a huge rally and you have been doing all the running, and you feel like there is no gas left in the tank? We have all been in this situation haven’t we. One plan is to hit 7 balls down and head for the shower. Unfortunately, most squash players, by their very nature play the game to win, and find this very hard to do. I myself have been in this situation numerous times. Generally, I have to say, I have lost from this situation. However, all is not lost, as sometimes I have won from here, so the plan must be to know that it can be done, and you are going to win from here this time! The first thing to do is to think no more than 2-3 points ahead. That way you will take it one step at a time, and then when you are knackered you can take one step. Try to get to 5 first. Maybe try taking the pace off with floaty length shots, to get your breath back, and as soon as is sensible in a rally go for the straight volley drop. By keeping the play slow, and limited to 2 corners, you will find you end up doing less running, and it is an energy-saving way to play. Really concentrate on each shot, and don’t play rash shots Once you are at 5, make your target 7, with the same attitude. Once 7 is attained, just 2 more to go! By setting little goals, the ultimate target becomes achievable! Now its 2-2, and anybody’s game. You are back in the hunt. Don’t change your tactics if they have worked. Just try to get to 3, then 6, then 9! Then you have won! Well done! Gee squash is easy over the email! Rob
