"Grinders"

I was watching a major golf tourney on telly the other day, and the commentators were talking about players that were good “grinders”. That is players that can hang in when the going gets tough, and grind it out. To me this is a much more appropriate term for squash players in a way. I don’t really know if it something that you can teach people to do, but it is such an important part of winning in a lot of cases. It is that ability to just keep hanging in the rally, and making sure that you keep the pressure on and don’t make a mistake. Here are two suggestions. Make sure that you push up the court and try and take the ball early- in front of your opponent if you like. Secondly, when you get stuck behind your opponent and they have an easy drop, go like hell to get it back. Too many players just give this shot up as if they have already lost the point. Once you show an interest in chasing from this position your opponent is then under pressure to do a good shot, and with pressure comes mistakes. I cannot stress enough the benefit in showing your opponent that you are there for the good rallies and the bad. Learn to hang in there, and you will win more ! PS- WE HAVE BEEN HAVIBG A GOOD RUN WITH A GOSEN SQUASH STRING. IT IS $40 STRUNG, AND SEEMS TO HAVE A REALLY NICE FEEL ON THE BALL, SO GIVE IT A GO. Cheers Rob
